월세방에서 출산한 지 6시간 된 갓난아기를 유기한 베트남 국적 유학생 커플이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.
4일 경찰 등에 따르면 대전경찰청 여성청소년과는 아동복지법 위반(아동 유기 등) 혐의로 베트남 국적 20대 여성 A씨와 연인 관계인 B씨(20대)를 불구속 입건해 조사하고 있다.
A씨는 지난달 23일 오후 7시 20분께 대전 유성구 월세방에서 남자 아이를 출산하고 24일 오전 1시 20분께 서구 보육원 앞에 남아를 유기한 혐의를 받고 있다. B씨는 A씨의 신생아 유기를 도운 혐의다.
보육원 앞에서 쓰레기를 수거하던 환경미화원이 같은 날 오전 7시 50분께 옷가지에 싸인 아기를 발견해 보육원 관계자에게 신고했다. 출동한 경찰은 아기를 병원으로 옮긴 뒤 CCTV 영상을 분석해 이틀 만인 지난달 26일 이들을 체포했다.
A씨는 "베트남에 있는 부모의 허락 없이 출산해 무서웠다"며 "키울 수 없을 것 같아 스마트폰으로 보육원을 검색한 뒤 아기를 가져다 놓았다"고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다. 그는 유학생 학생비자를 받아 입국했지만, 임신 당시에는 불법체류자 신분이었던 것으로 드러났다.
경찰은 A씨와 B씨에 대해 한 차례 구속영장을 신청했지만 기각됐다. 경찰은 A씨의 출산 후유증 치료를 지원하고 법무부에 출국금지를 요청한 후 이번 주 중 수사를 마무리하고 불구속 송치할 방침이다.
아기는 열흘 간 병원 치료를 마치고 현재 아동보호센터에서 보호받고 있다. 대전서구청은 모자에 대한 행정적 지원 방안을 강구하고 있다.

A Vietnamese student couple who abandoned a newborn baby 6 hours after giving birth in a rented room has been caught by police.
According to police on the 4th, Daejeon Police Agency's Women and Youth Division is investigating Vietnamese national A in her 20s and her boyfriend B (20s) after booking them without detention on charges of violating the Child Welfare Act (child abandonment).
A is suspected of giving birth to a baby boy at around 7:20 PM on the 23rd of last month in a rented room in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, and abandoning the boy in front of a nursery in Seo-gu at around 1:20 AM on the 24th. B is suspected of helping A abandon the newborn.
An environmental worker collecting trash in front of the nursery discovered the baby wrapped in clothes at around 7:50 AM on the same day and reported it to nursery officials. Police who were dispatched moved the baby to a hospital, analyzed CCTV footage, and arrested them two days later on the 26th of last month.
A reportedly stated "I was scared because I gave birth without permission from my parents in Vietnam" and "I thought I couldn't raise the baby, so I searched for a nursery on my smartphone and left the baby there." She entered the country with a student visa but was found to have been an illegal resident at the time of pregnancy.
Police applied for an arrest warrant for A and B once but it was rejected. Police plan to support A's postpartum treatment, request travel ban from the Ministry of Justice, complete the investigation this week, and refer them without detention.
The baby completed 10 days of hospital treatment and is currently being protected at a child protection center. Daejeon Seo-gu Office is considering administrative support measures for the mother and child.
