대전시가 미국 베이 에어리어에서 바이오 스타트업 인큐베이터와 차세대 배터리 기업을 방문했다.

최성아 대전시 정무경제과학부시장은 1월 6일부터 열린 CES를 방문한 뒤 캘리포니아주 베이 에어리어로 이동해 바카바이오랩과 앰프리우스를 차례로 방문했다고 밝혔다.

베이 에어리어는 샌프란시스코 인근 지역으로 실리콘밸리를 포함한다. UC버클리, 스탠퍼드대 등 주요 대학과 바이오, 반도체, 인공지능, 항공우주 분야 연구기관과 글로벌 기업이 밀집해 있다.

◆UC버클리 바카바이오랩 방문

최 부시장은 8일(현지시간) UC버클리 캠퍼스 내 바카바이오랩을 방문했다.

바카바이오랩은 UC버클리와 생명과학 창업 허브 QB3가 협력해 만든 대학 기반 바이오 스타트업 인큐베이터다. 생명과학 분야 초기 단계 기업들에게 연구 공간과 인프라, 운영 프로그램을 지원한다.

최 부시장은 바카바이오랩 운영진과 만나 기관 운영 구조와 스타트업 지원 체계를 청취했다. 공유형 연구 공간과 장비 운영 방식, 입주 기업과 연구자 간 협업 구조를 확인했다.

대전시는 대학 연구 성과가 창업과 초기 사업화로 이어지는 과정에 주목했다. 시가 추진 중인 바이오·첨단소재 분야 전략 사업과 연계 가능한 협력 방안을 논의했다.

◆앰프리우스 기술센터 견학

최 부시장은 9일(현지시간) 배터리 기업 앰프리우스를 방문해 기술센터와 연구시설을 둘러봤다.

앰프리우스는 실리콘 음극 기반 리튬이온 배터리를 개발하는 뉴욕증권거래소 상장기업이다. 기존 배터리보다 에너지 밀도가 높고 무게가 가볍다. 항공우주, 드론, 국방 등 고성능 배터리가 필요한 분야에 기술을 적용하고 있다.

최 부시장은 배터리 기술 개발 과정과 연구 조직 운영 방식, 주요 적용 사례를 확인했다. 앰프리우스는 한국에서 'Amprius Korea Battery Alliance'를 구축해 국내 기업과 협업하고 있다.

대전시는 이를 참고해 지역 에너지·첨단소재 기업과의 기술 협력 및 산업 연계 가능성을 검토했다.

최성아 부시장은 "베이 에어리어는 세계 최고 수준의 연구 역량과 혁신 기업, 글로벌 자본이 집적된 첨단기술 생태계"라며 "대학과 기업, 연구기관 간 교류를 통해 지역 기업의 기술 경쟁력 강화와 글로벌 진출로 이어지도록 협력 기반을 만들어 나가겠다"고 말했다.

Daejeon City visited a bio startup incubator and next-generation battery company in the U.S. Bay Area.

Vice Mayor Choi Sung-ah of Daejeon City announced that she visited CES starting January 6, then moved to the Bay Area in California to visit Bakar BioLabs and Amprius Technologies.

The Bay Area is a region near San Francisco that includes Silicon Valley. Major universities such as UC Berkeley and Stanford University, along with research institutions and global companies in bio, semiconductor, artificial intelligence, and aerospace sectors are concentrated here.

◆Visit to UC Berkeley Bakar BioLabs

Vice Mayor Choi visited Bakar BioLabs inside the UC Berkeley campus on January 8 (local time).

Bakar BioLabs is a university-based bio startup incubator created through cooperation between UC Berkeley and life science startup hub QB3. It provides research space, infrastructure, and operational programs to early-stage companies in the life sciences field.

Vice Mayor Choi met with Bakar BioLabs management to hear about the institutional operating structure and startup support system. She confirmed the shared research space and equipment operation methods, and the collaboration structure between resident companies and researchers.

Daejeon City paid attention to the process by which university research results lead to startups and early commercialization. The city discussed cooperation plans that could be linked to strategic projects in the bio and advanced materials sectors that it is promoting.

◆Tour of Amprius Technology Center

Vice Mayor Choi visited battery company Amprius on January 9 (local time) and toured the technology center and research facilities.

Amprius is a New York Stock Exchange-listed company that develops silicon anode-based lithium-ion batteries. It has higher energy density and lighter weight than existing batteries. It applies technology to fields requiring high-performance batteries such as aerospace, drones, and defense.

Vice Mayor Choi confirmed the battery technology development process, research organization operation methods, and major application cases. Amprius has established the 'Amprius Korea Battery Alliance' in Korea and is collaborating with domestic companies.

Daejeon City reviewed the possibility of technology cooperation and industrial linkage with local energy and advanced materials companies by referring to this.

Vice Mayor Choi Sung-ah said, "The Bay Area is an advanced technology ecosystem where world-class research capabilities, innovative companies, and global capital are concentrated," adding, "We will create a foundation for cooperation so that exchanges between universities, companies, and research institutions can lead to strengthening the technological competitiveness of local companies and expanding globally."
