대전지검 논산지청은 12일 백성현 충남 논산시장을 공직선거법 위반 혐의로 불구속 기소했다.
검찰에 따르면 백 시장은 2023년부터 2024년까지 명절마다 지역 선거구민 등 80여 명에게 270만원 상당의 명절 선물을 보내면서 자신의 명함을 동봉한 혐의를 받고 있다.
앞서 충남선거관리위원회는 백 시장의 행위가 공직선거법을 위반했다고 판단하고 2024년 11월 그를 고발한 바 있다. 고발 약 2개월 만에 재판에 넘겨지게 됐다.
공직선거법은 지방자치단체장이 법령 또는 조례에 근거 없이 선거구민에게 금품을 제공하거나 단체장 명의가 드러나는 형태로 기부하는 행위를 금지하고 있다.

Nonsan Mayor Indicted for Enclosing Business Cards in Holiday Gifts
The Nonsan Branch of the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office indicted Nonsan Mayor Baek Seong-hyeon on January 12 on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.
According to prosecutors, Mayor Baek is accused of sending holiday gifts worth approximately 2.7 million won to more than 80 constituents during holiday seasons from 2023 to 2024, with his personal business cards enclosed.
The South Chungcheong Provincial Election Commission had previously filed a complaint against Mayor Baek in November 2024 after determining his actions violated the election law. The indictment comes approximately two months after the complaint was filed.
The Public Official Election Act prohibits local government heads from providing money or goods to constituents without legal basis or from making donations that reveal the official's identity.
