12일 낮 충북 제천시 서부동 단독주택에서 70대 부부가 숨진 채 발견됐다. 경찰과 소방당국은 기름보일러에서 발생한 유독가스가 집 안으로 유입돼 사고가 발생한 것으로 추정하고 있다.
◆ 70대 부부 숨진 채 발견
12일 낮 12시40분께 가족의 신고를 받고 출동한 소방당국과 경찰은 충북 제천시 서부동 단독주택에서 70대 남편이 숨져 있는 것을 발견했다. 심정지 상태였던 부인은 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 이송 중 사망했다. 소방당국은 집 안에 연기가 자욱해 화재로 판단했으나 불이 나지 않은 것으로 확인됐다.
◆ 보일러실 유독가스 유입 추정
경찰은 보일러실에 연기가 가득했던 점을 근거로 기름보일러에서 발생한 유독가스가 집 안으로 유입된 것으로 보고 있다. 유독가스가 집 안에 들어온 경로와 부부가 유독가스에 노출된 시간은 확인되지 않았다.
◆ 범죄 혐의 없어 부검 의뢰
경찰은 타살 등 범죄 혐의점이 없다고 판단했다. 부부의 정확한 사인을 규명하기 위해 부검을 의뢰할 예정이다.

An elderly couple in their 70s was found dead in a detached house in Seobu-dong, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do on the afternoon of the 12th. Police and fire authorities suspect the accident occurred when toxic gas from an oil boiler leaked into the house.
◆ Elderly Couple Found Dead
Fire authorities and police responded to a family member's report at 12:40 PM on the 12th and found the husband dead inside a detached house in Seobu-dong, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. The wife was in cardiac arrest and was transported to a hospital but died during transport. Fire authorities initially suspected a fire because the house was filled with smoke, but confirmed no fire had occurred.
◆ Toxic Gas from Boiler Room Suspected
Police believe toxic gas from the oil boiler leaked into the house based on the fact that the boiler room was filled with smoke. The route through which the toxic gas entered the house and the duration of the couple's exposure to the gas have not been confirmed.
◆ No Criminal Evidence, Autopsy Requested
Police determined there were no signs of criminal activity such as murder. An autopsy will be requested to determine the exact cause of death for the couple.
