세종시 퇴직 경찰관으로 구성된 '세종 시니어폴리스'가 30일 올해 활동을 마무리했다.
세종 시니어폴리스는 지난 2월 세종자치경찰위원회, 세종경찰청, 세종종합사회복지관, 세종재향경우회가 공동으로 출범시킨 치안 보조 사업이다. 지역 치안 강화와 어린이 교통사고 예방을 목표로 한다.
올해 활동 인력 10명은 주로 하교 시간대 학원가 밀집 지역에서 자전거 절도 예방과 개인형 이동장치(PM) 교통사고 예방 활동을 수행했다. 혹서기에는 도심권 대형마트에서 기초질서 준수 캠페인을 벌였다. 전국적으로 어린이 납치 사건이 발생했을 당시에는 학교 앞 순찰도 담당했다.
시니어폴리스 활동은 자전거 절도 감소에 기여했다. 세종시 자전거 절도 건수는 지난해 2월~11월 191건에서 올해 같은 기간 113건으로 41% 감소했다.
또한 인도 위에 방치된 자전거를 정리해 도시 미관 개선과 보행자 안전 확보에도 도움을 줬다. 지역 주민들은 이에 호평을 보냈다.
세종자치경찰위원회는 내년 시니어폴리스 인력을 15명으로 확대할 계획이다. 활동 분야도 다양화할 방침이다.
남택화 세종자치경찰위원회 위원장은 "세종경찰청, 세종종합사회복지관 등 관계기관과 협력해 내년에도 시니어폴리스 사업을 지속하겠다"고 밝혔다. 남 위원장은 "지역 치안에 실질적인 도움이 될 수 있도록 운영할 것"이라고 말했다.

Ten retired officers patrolled academy districts, prevented traffic accidents; program to expand to 15 members next year
The Sejong Senior Police, a volunteer unit composed of retired police officers, concluded its 2024 operations on Nov. 30.
The Sejong Autonomous Police Commission, Sejong Police Agency, Sejong Community Welfare Center and Sejong Veterans Police Association jointly launched the public safety assistance program in February. The program aims to strengthen local security and prevent traffic accidents involving children.
Ten senior police members conducted patrols in academy-concentrated districts during after-school hours this year. The members focused on preventing bicycle theft and traffic accidents involving personal mobility devices. During the summer heat wave, the members promoted public order compliance at large supermarkets in urban areas. The members also patrolled school zones when child abduction cases occurred nationwide.
The Senior Police activities contributed to a decline in bicycle theft. Bicycle theft cases in Sejong dropped from 191 during February-November 2023 to 113 during the same period this year, a 41% decrease.
The members also organized bicycles left unattended on sidewalks, improving the city's appearance and pedestrian safety. Local residents praised the efforts.
The Sejong Autonomous Police Commission plans to expand the Senior Police program to 15 members next year. The commission will also diversify the unit's activities.
"We will continue the Senior Police program next year in cooperation with the Sejong Police Agency, Sejong Community Welfare Center and other related agencies," said Nam Taek-hwa, chairman of the Sejong Autonomous Police Commission. "We will operate the program to provide practical assistance to local public safety."
