◆ 신앙과 독서로 세 자녀 서울대 보내

독실한 기독교 신자인 양소영(53) 변호사가 세 자녀를 모두 서울대에 보낸 교육 비결을 공개했다. 양 변호사는 6일 유튜브 채널 '밉지 않은 관종언니'에서 "우리 아이들은 국어를 많이 했다. 독서와 논술 쓰기 과외를 시켰다"고 밝혔다.

◆ "과장하면 국어로 서울대 보냈다"

양 변호사는 "과장하면 아이들을 국어로 서울대 보냈다고 생각한다"며 "독해력이 되어야 과학책도 읽고 사회 문제도 풀 수 있다"고 강조했다. 막내 중학교 시절 수학 선생님이 "어머니, 책을 많이 읽혀주세요"라고 조언했다.

양 변호사는 "갈수록 수학 문제와 지문이 길어지고 개념도 어려워지는데 독해력이 안 되면 수학에 발전이 없다는 뜻이었다"고 설명했다. "마지막에 수학을 잘할 수 있는 아이들은 독해력 있는 아이들"이라며 "결국에는 국어, 책읽기가 가장 중요하다"고 말했다.

엄마의 독서 습관도 중요하다고 강조했다. 양 변호사는 "책은 내가 경험해보지 못한 세상을 간접 경험하게 해준다"며 "엄마가 세상에 대해서 공부를 많이 해서 시각을 넓혔으면 좋겠다. 엄마와 아이가 같이 책을 읽었으면 좋겠다"고 조언했다.

◆ 영어 유치원 3번 실패 후 독서·논술 집중

양소영 변호사는 세 자녀 모두 영어 유치원에 보냈지만 실패했다. 첫째 딸이 여섯 살부터 영어 유치원을 1년 다니다가 힘들다고 그만뒀다. 둘째 딸도 다섯 살부터 보냈지만 여섯 살 넘어가자 못 다니겠다고 했다.

막내 아들 때는 "영어 유치원에 안 가면 엉덩이 7대 때리겠다"고 엄포를 놨다. 양 변호사는 "막내가 7대를 맞더니 누나들에게 '이제 영어 유치원 안 가도 된다'면서 자랑하더라"며 "그때 이건 정말 아니구나 싶어서 때려치웠다"고 회상했다.

양 변호사는 "조기 유학을 보낸다는 목표가 명확하면 힘들더라도 영어 유치원을 보내야 한다고 생각한다"며 "부모와 함께 외국에 나갈 수 없다면 조기 유학을 반대하고, 영어 유치원도 꼭 필요하지 않다"고 밝혔다. 영어 유치원 실패 후 양 변호사는 독서와 논술 교육에 집중했다. 독서와 논술 쓰기 과외를 통해 세 자녀의 독해력을 키웠다.

◆ 이혼 전문 변호사, 신앙으로 상담 접근

양소영 변호사는 한국여성변호사회 부회장, 대한변협 공보이사 등으로 활동해왔다. 32세에 변호사를 개업해 10년 후 선배 조언으로 여성 의뢰인이 많은 가사 분야(이혼·상속)에 집중했다.

교회에 나간 후 의뢰인에게 종교 유무를 묻고, 종교가 없으면 교회에 나가 목사와 상담하라고 권한다. 큐티 책을 나눠주기도 한다. 양 변호사는 "자녀가 있다면 갈등을 헤쳐나가고 성장하는 모습을 보여줘야 한다"고 조언한다.

주례를 서며 "세모 모양의 사람과 결혼했으면 왜 동그라미가 되려 하느냐"며 배우자를 있는 그대로 인정하고 존중하는 '추앙'의 중요성을 강조한다. 양 변호사는 2019년 '칸나 기금'을 설립해 매달 어려운 사람을 돕는 공익 활동을 펼치고 있다. 9월 공익법인 지정을 앞두고 있다.

Yang explained, "Math problems and passages are getting longer and concepts more difficult, meaning there's no progress in math without reading comprehension." She stated, "Children who ultimately excel in math are those with reading comprehension," saying "In the end, Korean language and reading are most important."

She emphasized mothers' reading habits are also important. Yang advised, "Books provide indirect experience of worlds I haven't experienced," adding "I hope mothers study a lot about the world to broaden their perspectives. I hope mothers and children read books together."

◆ After 3 English kindergarten failures, focused on reading and essay writing

Lawyer Yang So-young sent all three children to English kindergarten but failed. Her first daughter quit after one year starting at age six, finding it difficult. Her second daughter also couldn't continue past age six despite starting at five.

For her youngest son, she threatened, "I'll spank you seven times if you don't go to English kindergarten." Yang recalled, "My youngest took seven spankings and then bragged to his sisters, 'Now I don't have to go to English kindergarten.' That's when I realized this really wasn't right and gave up."

Yang said, "I think English kindergarten is necessary despite difficulties if there's a clear goal of early study abroad," adding "If you can't go abroad with parents, I oppose early study abroad, and English kindergarten isn't essential either." After English kindergarten failures, Yang focused on reading and essay writing education. She developed her three children's reading comprehension through reading and essay writing tutoring.

◆ Divorce specialist lawyer approaches counseling through faith

Lawyer Yang So-young has served as Vice President of the Korean Women Lawyers Association and Public Relations Director of the Korean Bar Association. She opened her law practice at age 32 and ten years later focused on family affairs (divorce and inheritance) where female clients were numerous, following a senior's advice.

After attending church, she asks clients about their religion, and if they have none, recommends visiting church to consult with pastors. She also distributes devotional books. Yang advises, "If you have children, you must work through conflicts and show them growth."

When officiating weddings, she emphasizes the importance of 'admiration' - accepting and respecting spouses as they are, saying "If you married a triangle-shaped person, why try to make them round?" Yang established the 'Canna Fund' in 2019 and engages in public service activities helping people in need monthly. She is preparing for public interest corporation designation in September.
