캄보디아에서 한국인을 대상으로 한 범죄가 잇따르자 광주 지역 단체들의 현지 봉사와 이주민 행사 계획이 모두 취소됐다.

아시아희망나무는 17일, 오는 23일부터 4박 5일 일정으로 예정됐던 캄퐁스프주 광주진료소 의료봉사 계획을 취소했다고 밝혔다. 광주진료소는 지난 11년간 2개월 단위로 의료봉사를 이어온 곳으로, 이번에도 의료진 5명이 방문할 예정이었다. 아시아희망나무는 해당 지역이 정부 여행경보 2단계(여행자제)로 비교적 안전하다고 알려졌지만, 봉사자 안전을 최우선으로 고려해 계획을 취소했다고 설명했다.

또한 광주 지역 캄보디아 이주민들의 추석 행사인 ‘프춤번’도 취소됐다. 이 행사는 당초 19일 광산구 옥동2공원에서 전통춤 공연과 명절 체험 행사로 진행될 예정이었으나, 최근 현지에서 한국인을 대상으로 한 범죄 발생 문제로 중단됐다.

서정성 아시아희망나무 이사장은 “정부의 캄보디아 여행경보 지침을 따르고 봉사자 안전을 최우선으로 고려한 결정”이라고 밝혔다.

Amid rising crimes targeting Koreans in Cambodia, local organizations in Gwangju have canceled their planned medical volunteer work and immigrant community events.

On the 17th, Asia Hope Tree announced the cancellation of its medical volunteer trip scheduled from October 23 for five days at the Gwangju Clinic in Kampong Speu Province. The clinic has hosted medical volunteer work every two months for the past 11 years, and five medical staff were scheduled to participate. Although the area is designated as Level 2 (Travel Caution) by the Korean government and considered relatively safe, the organization decided to cancel the trip to prioritize the safety of volunteers.

Additionally, the ‘Pchum Ben’ festival, a traditional Cambodian harvest celebration for Gwangju-based Cambodian immigrants, was also canceled. The event was scheduled for October 19 at Okdong 2 Park, Gwangsan District, featuring traditional dance performances and cultural activities, but was suspended due to recent crimes targeting Koreans in Cambodia.

Seo Jeong-sung, director of Asia Hope Tree, said, “This decision follows the government’s travel advisory for Cambodia and prioritizes the safety of our volunteers.”
