◆ 이 대통령, 1박 2일 방일 마치고 귀국

이재명 대통령이 14일 1박 2일간의 일본 방문을 마치고 귀국한다. 이번 방일은 이 대통령 취임 후 일본 총리와 가진 다섯 번째 정상회담이다. 개별 국가 기준으로 가장 많은 횟수다.

이 대통령과 다카이치 사나에 일본 총리는 지난해 11월 남아프리카공화국 약식회담 이후 한 달여 만에 다시 만났다. 한일 셔틀외교가 본궤도에 올랐다는 평가다.

◆ 나라현 호류지 방문…한일 교류 상징

이 대통령은 방일 이틀째인 14일 오전 다카이치 총리와 함께 나라현 호류지를 방문한다. 나라현은 다카이치 총리의 고향이자 정치적 기반이다. 역대 일본 총리가 자신의 지역구로 외국 정상을 초청해 회담한 사례는 드물다. 나라현에서 일본 총리와 외국 정상이 공식 회담을 가진 것은 이번이 처음이다.

청와대는 "일본의 가장 오래된 고도이자 1500년 전부터 한반도와 인연이 깊은 나라현으로 이 대통령을 초청한 것은 일본 측의 배려"라고 설명했다. 양 정상은 호류지를 둘러보며 양국의 오랜 인연을 되새길 예정이다.

이후 이 대통령은 오사카로 이동해 간사이 지역 동포 간담회에 참석한다. 동포들을 격려하고 현지 생활 애로사항을 청취할 계획이다. 이 대통령은 동포 간담회를 끝으로 방일 일정을 마무리하고 오후 공군 1호기 편으로 귀국한다.

◆ 정상회담 주요 합의 사항

이 대통령은 전날인 13일 다카이치 총리와 정상회담에서 과거사 문제와 실질적 협력 방안을 논의했다. 양 정상은 조세이 탄광 수몰 사고 희생자 유해 신원 확인을 위한 DNA 감정 추진에 합의했다. 양국 정부 차원의 인도적 협력이 시작됐다.

양국은 스캠 범죄 등 초국가 범죄 공동 대응을 위해 경찰청 간 공조를 제도화하기로 했다. 미래 세대 교류 확대를 위해 청년 기술자격 상호인정 범위 대폭 확대 방안도 논의했다. 대북 정책에서 긴밀히 공조하기로 했고, 이 대통령은 한중일 3국 협력 필요성도 강조했다.

◆ President Lee concludes Japan visit

President Lee Jae-myung returns to Korea on January 14 after a two-day visit to Japan. This visit marks the fifth summit with the Japanese prime minister since President Lee took office. This is the highest number of summits with any single country.

President Lee and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae met again about one month after their informal meeting in South Africa in November last year. The Korea-Japan shuttle diplomacy is now on track.

◆ Horyuji Temple visit symbolizes Korea-Japan exchange

President Lee will visit Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture with Prime Minister Takaichi on the morning of January 14. Nara Prefecture is Prime Minister Takaichi's hometown and political base. It is rare for a Japanese prime minister to invite a foreign leader to hold talks in their own constituency. This is the first time a Japanese prime minister and foreign leader held an official summit in Nara Prefecture.

The Presidential Office explained that Japan's invitation to Nara Prefecture, Japan's oldest ancient capital with deep ties to the Korean Peninsula for 1,500 years, reflects Japanese consideration. The two leaders will tour Horyuji Temple and reflect on the long relationship between the two countries.

President Lee will then travel to Osaka to attend a meeting with Korean residents in the Kansai region. He plans to encourage Korean residents and listen to their concerns about local life. President Lee will conclude his Japan visit after the meeting and return home aboard Air Force One in the afternoon.

◆ Key summit agreements

President Lee discussed historical issues and practical cooperation measures with Prime Minister Takaichi during their summit on January 13. The two leaders agreed to pursue DNA testing to identify remains of victims from the Choseong Coal Mine flooding accident. Humanitarian cooperation at the government level has begun.

The two countries agreed to institutionalize cooperation between police agencies to jointly respond to transnational crimes including scam fraud. They also discussed significantly expanding the scope of mutual recognition of youth technical qualifications to increase future generation exchanges. They agreed to closely coordinate on North Korea policy, and President Lee emphasized the need for Korea-China-Japan trilateral cooperation.
