충북문화재단 김경식 대표이사가 8일 (사)한국선교유적연구회 청주지회장에 임명됐다. 청주 탑동 양관의 유네스코 세계유산 등재를 이끌게 됐다.

◆ 1906년부터 32년간 조성된 근대건축물 군

탑동 양관은 1906년부터 1932년까지 조성된 6동의 근대건축물 군이다. 주거, 교육, 의료 기능이 결합된 공간 구조를 갖췄다. 청주 지역 근대사와 도시 형성 과정을 보여준다. 충청북도 유형문화유산으로 지정됐다. 전통 건축에서 근대 건축으로 이행하던 과도기 특징을 간직하고 있다.

전문가들은 탑동 양관이 단일 건축물 가치를 넘어선다고 평가한다. 입지와 배치, 접근로 형성 과정을 통해 근대 도시공간 형성과 생활상을 입체적으로 보여준다는 설명이다. 근대기 교육, 의료, 주거 기능이 결합된 복합 문화공간이다. 서구 근대 문물이 지역 사회로 유입되는 과정을 보여주는 사례로 꼽힌다. 청주, 공주, 전주, 광주, 목포, 순천, 대구, 김제 등 전국 주요 근대문화유산과 연계한 연속유산으로 세계유산 등재 가능성이 거론된다.

◆ 2030년 세계문화유산 등재 목표

김경식 위원장은 "탑동 양관은 청주 근대화의 산실이자 상징이다. 도시 정체성을 보여주는 대표 랜드마크"라고 말했다. "탑동 양관을 포함한 충북 문화유산은 지역을 넘어 세계와 공유할 수 있는 보편적 가치를 지닌다"고 덧붙였다. "근대문화유산의 체계적 연구와 보존, 활용을 통해 2030년 세계문화유산 등재 목표에 다가가겠다"고 밝혔다.

청주 유네스코 등재 추진위원회 출범으로 탑동 양관과 청주제일교회의 문화적, 역사적 가치가 재조명되고 있다. 세계유산 등재를 향한 위원회 행보에 관심이 쏠린다.

◆ Modern architectural complex built over 32 years from 1906

Tapdong Western-style Houses is a complex of six modern buildings constructed from 1906 to 1932. The complex features a spatial structure combining residential, educational, and medical functions. It demonstrates the modern history and urban formation process of the Cheongju region. The site has been designated as a Chungcheongbuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage. It preserves characteristics of the transitional period from traditional to modern architecture.

Experts evaluate that Tapdong Western-style Houses transcends the value of a single architectural structure. They explain that it demonstrates the formation of modern urban space and lifestyle in a three-dimensional manner through location, layout, and access road formation process. It is a complex cultural space combining educational, medical, and residential functions during the modern period. It is considered an important example showing the process of Western modern culture flowing into local communities. The possibility of World Heritage inscription as a serial property linked with major modern cultural heritage sites nationwide, including Cheongju, Gongju, Jeonju, Gwangju, Mokpo, Suncheon, Daegu, and Gimje, is being discussed.

◆ Targeting World Cultural Heritage inscription by 2030

Chairman Kim Kyung-sik said, "Tapdong Western-style Houses is the cradle and symbol of Cheongju's modernization. It is a representative landmark showing the city's identity." He added, "Cultural heritage in Chungbuk, including Tapdong Western-style Houses, has universal value that can be shared with the world beyond the region." He stated, "We will approach the goal of World Cultural Heritage inscription in 2030 through systematic research, preservation, and utilization of modern cultural heritage."

With the launch of the Cheongju UNESCO Registration Promotion Committee, the cultural and historical value of Tapdong Western-style Houses and Cheongju First Church is being re-illuminated. Attention is focused on the committee's steps toward World Heritage inscription.
