◆ 11월 말 기준 5천24명…2021년 이후 처음

청주시가 4년 만에 연간 출생아 5천명을 넘어섰다. 10일 청주시에 따르면 11월 말 기준 올해 출생아 수는 5천24명으로 집계됐다. 연간 출생아 수가 5천명을 넘은 것은 2021년 5천192명 이후 처음이다. 올해 월평균 출생아 수는 456.7명으로, 2023년 월평균 408.3명보다 약 48명 많았다.

◆ 인구 50만 이상 도시 중 출생아 증가율 1위

출생아 증가 폭도 전국 상위권이다. 인구 50만명 이상 시·군·구 가운데 전년 같은 기간 대비 출생아 증가율은 청주시가 13.6%로 1위를 기록했다. 경기도 파주시 13.2%, 안양시 12.3%, 화성시 11.6% 순으로 나타났다. 11월 기준 누적 출생아 수가 5천명을 넘은 도시는 전국 229개 시·군·구 중 화성시(7천390명), 수원시(6천455명), 용인시(5천325명), 고양시(5천39명), 청주시(5천24명) 다섯 곳이다. 이 가운데 비수도권은 청주시가 유일하다.

◆ 합계출산율도 전국 평균 웃돌아

청주시 합계출산율은 전국 평균보다 높은 수준을 유지하고 있다. 청주시 합계출산율은 2020년 0.959, 2021년 0.941, 2022년 0.860, 2023년 0.880, 2024년 0.881이다. 같은 기간 전국 평균은 2020년 0.837, 2021년 0.808, 2022년 0.778, 2023년 0.721, 2024년 0.748로 나타났다. 남석화 청주시 정책기획과장은 "비수도권 기초자치단체에서 인구 자연증가가 지속적으로 나타나는 사례가 드문 만큼, 출생 규모와 증가율이 동시에 상위권에 오른 점이 의미 있다"고 평가했다. 이범석 청주시장은 "청주시 출생아 증가가 돌봄과 양육 인프라 확충 등 지역 정책이 영향을 준 결과라고 보고 있다"며 "관련 정책을 내년에도 적극적으로 이어갈 계획"이라고 밝혔다.

Cheongju-si exceeded 5,000 annual births for the first time in four years. According to Cheongju-si on Dec. 10, the number of births this year reached 5,024 as of the end of November. This is the first time the annual birth count exceeded 5,000 since 5,192 births in 2021. The monthly average number of births this year was 456.7, approximately 48 more than the 2023 monthly average of 408.3.

◆ Highest Birth Rate Increase Among Cities with Population Over 500,000

The increase in births also ranked among the highest nationwide. Among cities, counties, and districts with populations over 500,000, Cheongju-si recorded the highest year-on-year birth rate increase at 13.6%. Paju-si in Gyeonggi-do followed at 13.2%, Anyang-si at 12.3%, and Hwaseong-si at 11.6%. Among the 229 cities, counties, and districts nationwide, only five cities had cumulative births exceeding 5,000 as of November: Hwaseong-si (7,390), Suwon-si (6,455), Yongin-si (5,325), Goyang-si (5,039), and Cheongju-si (5,024). Among these, Cheongju-si is the only city outside the capital region.

◆ Total Fertility Rate Also Exceeds National Average

Cheongju-si's total fertility rate remains higher than the national average. Cheongju-si's total fertility rate was 0.959 in 2020, 0.941 in 2021, 0.860 in 2022, 0.880 in 2023, and 0.881 in 2024. The national average during the same period was 0.837 in 2020, 0.808 in 2021, 0.778 in 2022, 0.721 in 2023, and 0.748 in 2024. Nam Seok-hwa, head of the Policy Planning Division of Cheongju-si, said, "It is meaningful that both the birth scale and growth rate ranked among the top, as cases of sustained natural population increase in non-capital region basic local governments are rare." Cheongju Mayor Lee Beom-seok said, "We believe the increase in births in Cheongju-si is a result of regional policies such as expanding childcare and parenting infrastructure," adding, "We plan to actively continue related policies next year."
