음성군 남신초등학교(교장 김미실)가 독립운동가 보재 이상설 선생 서훈 승격 전국 릴레이 캠페인에 동참했다. 학교는 보재 이상설 선생 교육정신 계승과 서훈 승격 염원을 담아 다음 릴레이 주자로 수봉초등학교를 지목했다.

◆ 1907년 헤이그 특사, 62년 전 서훈의 재평가

보재 이상설 선생(1870~1917)은 일제강점기 1907년 헤이그 만국평화회의에 특사로 파견되어 국권회복을 위한 외교활동을 전개했다. 중국과 러시아에서도 독립운동을 주도했다. 정부는 1962년 선생의 공훈을 기리어 건국훈장 대통령장(2등급)을 추서했으나 학계와 교육계에서는 현재 서훈이 공적에 비해 낮다며 대한민국장(1등급) 상향을 촉구하고 있다.

◆ 교실 속 민족정신의 실천

금왕·음성지역 초등학교들은 "보재 이상설 선생이 무상교육을 실천하며 민족의식을 일깨운 업적은 교육사적으로 매우 큰 의미가 있으며 그 정신을 교실 속 교육으로 잇는 노력이 필요하다"고 강조했다.

Bo-jae Lee Sang-seol (1870-1917) was dispatched as a special envoy to the 1907 Hague Peace Conference during Japanese colonial rule, where he conducted diplomatic activities for national sovereignty restoration. He also led independence movements in China and Russia. The government posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of the Order of Merit (2nd Class) in 1962 in recognition of his contributions. However, academic and educational circles are currently calling for an upgrade to the Order of Merit of the Republic of Korea (1st Class), citing that current honors do not adequately reflect his achievements.

◆ Passing Down National Spirit Through Classroom Practice

Elementary schools in the Geumwang and Eumseong regions emphasized that "Bo-jae Lee Sang-seol's legacy of practicing free education while awakening national consciousness holds profound significance in educational history, and efforts to carry forward his spirit through classroom education are essential."
