충주시립미술관 국제설계공모, 세계적 건축가 6팀 확정

충주시가 추진 중인 「충주시립미술관 건립 국제지명 설계공모」에 세계적 건축가들이 대거 참여한다.

충주시는 13일 이번 공모의 지명 건축가 6팀을 최종 확정했다고 밝혔다.

건축·도시 분야 전문가 5인으로 구성된 운영위원회가 공정한 심사를 거쳐 국내외 6개 팀을 선정했다. 세계적인 건축 거장들과 한국의 대표 건축가들이 함께 이름을 올렸다.

국외 건축가는 일본의 겐고 쿠마(Kengo Kuma & Associates), 포르투갈의 미누엘 아이레스 마테우스(Aires Mateus), 미국의 스티븐 홀(Steven Holl Architects) 등 3팀이 선정됐다.

겐고 쿠마는 도쿄 올림픽 주경기장과 네즈미술관으로 잘 알려져 있다. 목재와 자연 소재를 활용한 따뜻한 공간미학으로 세계적 명성을 얻고 있다.

아이레스 마테우스는 스위스 포토 엘리제, 그란돌라 미팅센터 등으로 유럽 현대건축의 미니멀리즘을 대표한다. 스티븐 홀은 핀란드 키아스마 현대미술관과 미국 켐퍼 미술관을 통해 빛과 공간을 예술적으로 해석한 건축가로 평가받고 있다.

국내 건축가는 유현준앤파트너스(유현준), UIA건축사사무소(위진복), SKM Architects(민성진) 등 3팀이 확정됐다.

유현준 건축가는 오아르 미술관과 JYP엔터테인먼트 사옥 등 문화·상업시설을 설계하며 대중적 인지도를 쌓았다. 위진복 건축가는 '클라우드 아케이드'와 2025 오사카엑스포 한국관으로 참신한 공공건축으로 주목받고 있다.

민성진 건축가는 자이 주택문화관, 아난티 앳 부산 코브 등에서 예술성과 실험성이 조화를 이룬 건축으로 평가받고 있다.

선정된 6개 팀은 참가 등록 후 약 3개월간 설계안을 준비한다. 12월 19일 작품 심사를 거쳐 최종 당선작이 결정된다.

조길형 충주시장은 "충주시립미술관은 건축물 자체가 예술이 되는 도시의 새로운 상징으로 탄생할 것"이라며 "세계적인 건축가들과 함께 충주의 품격을 높이고, 시민이 자랑할 수 있는 문화도시로 발전시켜 나가겠다"고 밝혔다.

충주시립미술관은 2026년 10월 착공, 2028년 준공을 목표로 추진 중이다. 총사업비 396억원을 투입해 연면적 4천910㎡ 규모로 호암공원 내에 들어선다.

전시실, 수장고, 북카페, 교육실, 다목적실 등을 갖춘 복합문화공간으로 조성된다. 시민과 관광객이 함께 예술을 향유하는 열린 미술관이 될 예정이다.

World-renowned architects will participate in large numbers in the "Chungju City Museum of Art Construction International Nominated Design Competition" being promoted by Chungju City.

Chungju City announced on the 13th that it has finalized 6 teams of nominated architects for this competition.

This nomination is the result of selecting 6 domestic and foreign teams through a fair screening by an operating committee composed of 5 experts in the architecture and urban fields. World-renowned architectural masters and Korea's representative architects were named together.

Foreign architects selected include 3 teams: Kengo Kuma & Associates from Japan, Aires Mateus from Portugal, and Steven Holl Architects from the United States.

Kengo Kuma is well known for the Tokyo Olympic main stadium and Nezu Museum. He has gained worldwide fame for his warm spatial aesthetics using wood and natural materials.

Aires Mateus represents the minimalism of contemporary European architecture with Switzerland's Photo Elysée and Grandola Meeting Center. Steven Holl is evaluated as an architect who artistically interprets light and space through Finland's Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and the United States' Kemper Art Museum.

Domestic architects include 3 teams: Hyunjoon Yoo Architects & Partners (Yoo Hyun-jun), UIA Architects (Wi Jin-bok), and SKM Architects (Min Seong-jin).

Architect Yoo Hyun-jun has built public recognition by designing cultural and commercial facilities such as the OAR Museum and JYP Entertainment headquarters. Architect Wi Jin-bok is attracting attention for his innovative public architecture with 'Cloud Arcade' and the Korean Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka Expo.

Architect Min Seong-jin is evaluated for architecture that harmonizes artistry and experimentalism in the Xi Housing Culture Center and Ananti at Busan Cove.

The 6 selected teams will prepare design proposals for about 3 months after registration. The final winning work will be decided through a work screening on December 19.

Chungju Mayor Jo Gil-hyung said, "The Chungju City Museum of Art will be born as a new symbol of a city where the building itself becomes art," and "Together with world-renowned architects, we will raise the dignity of Chungju and develop it into a cultural city that citizens can be proud of."

Meanwhile, the Chungju City Museum of Art is being promoted with the goal of starting construction in October 2026 and completing it in 2028, and will be built in Hoam Park with a total floor area of 4,910㎡ by investing 39.6 billion won in total project costs.

It will be created as a complex cultural space with exhibition rooms, storage, book cafe, education rooms, and multipurpose rooms, and will become an open museum where citizens and tourists can enjoy art together.
