당진시가 지난 12일 서울 국회 소통관에서 포항시, 광양시와 함께 철강산업 위기 극복을 위한 정부 특단 대책을 촉구했다. 세 도시는 미국의 50% 고율 철강제품 관세 재협상과 K-스틸법 시행령 마련을 중심으로 한 범정부 차원의 대책을 요구했다. 당진·포항·광양 3개 시장, 국회의원, 상공회의소 회장단 등 주요 관계자가 참석했다.

◆ 국내 조강 생산량 93% 담당 도시들 위기 당진·포항·광양은 지난해 기준 국내 조강 생산량의 93%를 차지한다. 미국의 고율 관세와 글로벌 경기 침체로 이들 도시의 철강 수출이 급감하면서 지역경제 전반이 위축되고 있다. 당진시는 현대제철을 중심으로 철강산업이 지역경제의 중추적 역할을 하고 있지만 전기요금 상승, 원자재 가격 급등, 수출 감소 등 복합적 위기에 직면했다.

오성환 당진시장은 "철강산업의 위기는 특정 기업이나 지역의 문제가 아닌 국가경제 전반의 위기"라며 "정부가 외교력을 총동원해 미국과의 관세 재협상에 나서야 한다"고 말했다.

당진시는 이번 공동기자회견을 계기로 포항·광양과 협력체계를 강화해 철강산업 경쟁력 회복과 지역경제 안정화를 위한 공조를 이어갈 계획이다.

◆ Three Core Proposals Submitted The three cities submitted three key proposals to the government and National Assembly: ▲Renegotiating U.S. steel tariffs and establishing response strategies ▲Reflecting on-site opinions in K-Steel Law enforcement decrees ▲Expanding steel industry crisis area designation and support. They emphasized that the K-Steel Law enforcement decrees must include practical measures such as reducing electricity cost burdens on companies and securing national funds for infrastructure expansion.

Mayor Oh Sung-hwan stated: "The steel industry crisis is not a problem for specific companies or regions but a crisis for the national economy overall. The government must mobilize diplomatic resources to renegotiate tariffs with the United States."

Dangjin City plans to strengthen cooperation frameworks with Pohang and Gwangyang to sustain coordination efforts for recovering steel industry competitiveness and stabilizing the regional economy.
