9일 오후 2시 43분께 충남 태안군 원북면 태안화력발전소에서 폭발음과 함께 화재가 발생했다. 119에 "발전소 후문 쪽에서 폭발음과 함께 불길이 치솟고 있다"는 신고가 접수됐다. 소방 당국은 인력 70여 명과 장비 30여 대를 투입했다. 소방대원들은 약 1시간 만인 오후 3시 49분께 큰 불길을 잡았다.

◆ 작업자 2명 2도 화상…생명 지장 없어

이 사고로 작업자 2명이 2도 화상을 입었다. 소방 당국은 부상자 2명을 병원으로 이송했다. 부상자들은 생명에 지장이 없는 것으로 확인됐다. 다른 근로자들은 현장에서 대피했다. 추가 인명피해는 발생하지 않았다.

◆ 열교환기 버너 교체 중 폭발 추정

소방 당국은 석탄가스화 복합발전설비(IGCC) 건물 1층에서 열교환기 버너를 교체하는 과정에서 폭발 사고가 발생한 것으로 추정하고 있다. 소방 당국은 추가 폭발 위험이나 연소 확대 우려는 없다고 밝혔다.

Two workers suffered second-degree burns in this accident. Fire authorities transported the two injured to the hospital. The injured were confirmed to have no life-threatening conditions. Other workers evacuated from the site. No additional casualties occurred.

Fire authorities suspect the explosion occurred during the process of replacing a heat exchanger burner on the first floor of the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) building. Fire authorities stated there is no risk of additional explosions or fire spread.
