청주국제공항이 지난해에 이어 올해도 국제선 이용객 최고 기록을 경신했다.

8일 한국공항공사 항공통계자료에 따르면 올해 11월 말 기준 청주공항 국제선 이용객은 172만명을 넘어 지난해(146만8천685명) 대비 17% 증가했다. 전체 이용객도 421만명을 기록해 2년 연속 연간 400만명을 돌파했다.

연초 폭설로 인한 대규모 결항과 지난해 말 제주항공 사고 여파 등 악조건 속에서도 국제선 다변화와 해외여행 수요 회복이 빠른 반등을 이끌었다. 중국, 일본, 동남아 노선 확충으로 이용객 선택 폭이 넓어졌고, 빠른 수속과 편리한 접근성으로 경기 북부권 수요까지 흡수했다.

청주공항이 지역 거점 공항을 넘어 중부권 핵심 국제공항으로 위상을 강화하고 있다는 평가가 나온다.

충북도는 이러한 성장세를 이어가기 위해 항공사 협력 확대와 신규 노선 유치에 속도를 낼 계획이다. 공항공사와 협력해 이용 환경 개선, 접근성 강화, 기반시설 확충 등 이용객 편의 증진에도 나선다.

강창식 충북도 균형건설국장은 "청주공항 활성화와 지속 성장을 위해 주차장, 여객 터미널 확장 등 기반시설 확충은 물론 민간 전용 활주로 신설이 절실하다"며 "내년 초 확정 예정인 제7차 공항개발 종합계획에 민간 전용 활주로 신설 반영과 청주공항 특별법 연내 제정을 위해 최선을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다.

Cheongju Airport Tops 4 Million Passengers for Second Straight Year

CHEONGJU — Cheongju International Airport has set a new record for international passengers for the second consecutive year.

According to Korea Airports Corporation data released on Dec. 8, international passenger traffic at Cheongju Airport exceeded 1.72 million through November, marking a 17 percent increase from 1,468,685 in 2024. Total passenger volume reached 4.21 million, surpassing the 4 million mark for the second straight year.

The airport achieved this growth despite challenges including mass flight cancellations due to heavy snowfall early this year and the aftermath of last year's Jeju Air accident. Analysts attribute the rebound to route diversification and recovering overseas travel demand. Expanded service to China, Japan and Southeast Asia broadened traveler options, while efficient processing and convenient access attracted passengers from northern Gyeonggi Province.

The airport is increasingly viewed as a key international hub for the central region, beyond its role as a regional gateway.

North Chungcheong Province plans to accelerate airline partnerships and attract new routes to sustain growth. The province will also work with the airport corporation to improve facilities, enhance accessibility and expand infrastructure.

Kang Chang-sik, director general of balanced construction at North Chungcheong Province, stated, "Sustained growth requires infrastructure expansion including parking and terminal facilities, as well as a dedicated civilian runway." He added, "We will work to include the new runway in the 7th Airport Development Master Plan, set for finalization early next year, and push for passage of the Cheongju Airport Special Act within this year."
