◆ 2013년 이후 처음 인구 증가
대전시는 2일 지난달 기준 대전시 인구가 144만1천886명으로 지난해 말보다 2천729명 늘었다고 밝혔다. 인구 증가 규모는 경기(3만1천25명), 인천(2만9천537명) 다음으로 전국 3위다. 대전 인구는 2013년 153만2천811명에서 지난해 143만9천157명으로 지속 감소했다. 지난 5월부터 순유입을 기록하며 5개월 연속 증가세로 전환됐다.
◆ 지역경제 성장이 인구 증가 견인
시는 인구 증가 배경으로 지역경제 성장을 꼽았다. 지역 상장기업 67개사 시가총액은 약 90조원 규모로 4년 전 35조원보다 크게 늘었다. 외국인직접투자액(FDI)은 지난해 5억9천100만달러로 2021년 대비 5배 증가해 역대 최대 실적을 기록했다.
◆ 글로벌 기업 대전 투자 잇따라
독일 머크 라이프사이언스는 대전에 신규 바이오프로세싱 생산센터 건립을 위해 4천300억원(3억 유로)을 투자해 올해 완공을 앞두고 있다. 리가켐바이오 등에도 외국 바이오 기업 투자가 잇따르며 FDI가 급증하고 있다. 이장우 대전시장은 "전국적인 인구 감소 추세에서 대전 인구가 늘며 반전된 것은 대전시정의 상징적인 수치"라고 밝혔다.

◆ First Population Increase Since 2013
Daejeon City announced on December 2 that the city's population reached 1,441,886 as of last month, an increase of 2,729 from the end of last year. The population increase ranks third nationwide after Gyeonggi (31,025) and Incheon (29,537). Daejeon's population continuously declined from 1,532,811 in 2013 to 1,439,157 last year. The city recorded net inflow starting in May and has seen five consecutive months of growth.
◆ Regional Economic Growth Drives Population Increase
The city cited regional economic growth as the background for population increase. The market capitalization of 67 local listed companies is approximately 90 trillion won, significantly higher than 35 trillion won four years ago. Foreign direct investment (FDI) reached $591 million last year, a fivefold increase compared to 2021, marking a record high.
◆ Global Companies Continue to Invest in Daejeon
Germany's Merck Life Science invested 430 billion won (300 million euros) to build a new bioprocessing production center in Daejeon, which is scheduled for completion this year. Foreign biotech companies continue to invest in companies such as LegoChem Biosciences, causing FDI to surge. Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo stated, "The reversal of Daejeon's population growth amid the nationwide population decline is a symbolic figure for Daejeon's city administration."
