◆ 1차사업 1.8ha 면적서 완료
청주시가 도시열섬현상 완화와 미세먼지 저감을 위한 도시바람길숲 조성사업의 1차년도를 완료했다. 상당구 용암동 방서수변공원 2호에 약 30억원을 투입해 1.8ha 면적의 디딤확산숲을 조성했으며, 12월 7일 준공을 앞두고 있다.
도시바람길숲 조성사업은 2024년 기본 및 실시설계를 시작으로 2025년부터 2027년까지 3개년에 걸쳐 진행되며 총 200억원의 사업비가 투입된다.
◆ 외곽 찬공기 도심까지 전달
도시바람길숲은 세 가지 유형으로 구성된다. 도시 외곽의 산림을 활용하는 바람생성숲, 하천과 가로축을 따라 조성되는 연결숲, 도심 공원녹지에 확산 기능을 부여하는 디딤확산숲이다.
이 중 디딤확산숲은 외곽 산림에서 생성된 찬 공기가 도심 속에 머물도록 하는 역할을 담당한다. 도시 기온을 낮추고 복사열을 차단하는 핵심 기능을 수행한다. 방서수변공원 디딤확산숲에는 소나무 숲, 메타세쿼이아 길, 대왕참나무길, 이팝나무길, 벚나무길 등 다양한 테마 숲이 조성되어 시민들이 사계절 변화하는 숲 경관을 즐길 수 있다.
◆ 2027년까지 권역별 단계 확대
청주시는 올해 6월 월운천 연결숲 조성을 완료했다. 총사업비 13억원이 투입된 이 사업으로 외곽-도심-가로변으로 이어지는 도시 바람길 축을 강화했다.
앞으로 2026년에는 방서동남권역과 산업단지권역에, 2027년에는 율량천변 권역으로 단계적으로 확대하여 도시 전역의 바람길 체계를 완성할 계획이다. 시 관계자는 "도시바람길숲은 단순 녹지 확충을 넘어 여름철 열섬현상 완화와 도시 생태환경 근본적 개선을 위한 핵심 사업"이라며 "2027년까지 단계적 추진을 통해 시민들이 더 시원하고 쾌적한 청주를 체감하도록 최선을 다하겠다"고 말했다.

◆ Phase 1 Project Completed on 1.8ha Area
Cheongju City completed Phase 1 of its Urban Wind Forest project designed to mitigate urban heat island effects and reduce fine dust. The city invested approximately 3 billion won to create a 1.8-hectare stepping-stone distribution forest at Bangseo Waterside Park No. 2 in Yongam-dong, Sangdang-gu, ahead of its December 7 opening.
The Urban Wind Forest project began with basic and detailed design in 2024 and proceeds through 2027 in three phases with a total project budget of 20 billion won.
◆ Cool Air from Outskirts Reaches Urban Center
The Urban Wind Forest consists of three types: wind generation forests using forests on the city outskirts, connector forests along rivers and major roads, and stepping-stone distribution forests that provide diffusion functions in urban parks and greenery.
The stepping-stone distribution forest serves as the core component. Cool air generated in outlying forests remains in the urban area, lowering city temperatures and blocking radiant heat. The Bangseo Waterside Park stepping-stone distribution forest features diverse themed forests including pine forests, bald cypress lanes, swamp white oak lanes, Italian ash tree lanes, and cherry tree lanes. Citizens can experience changing forest landscapes throughout the four seasons.
◆ Phased Expansion by District Through 2027
Cheongju City completed the Worun Stream connector forest project in June this year. With 1.3 billion won invested, this project strengthened the urban wind corridor system connecting outskirts, urban centers, and roadsides.
Going forward, the city plans phased expansion to the Bangseo Southeast region and industrial complex areas in 2026, and to the Yulryang Stream riverside area in 2027, completing the city-wide wind corridor system. A city official stated, "The Urban Wind Forest project goes beyond simple greenery expansion to fundamentally improve summer heat island mitigation and urban ecological environments. Through phased implementation through 2027, we will ensure citizens experience a cooler and more pleasant Cheongju."
